As a parent, we want the absolute best for our children. We only go through childhood once, and with that knowledge, we want to get it right. We want to build a foundation for them that will lead to a happy and successful life.
It is a well known fact that sports play a big part in the development of the skills necessary to achieve that life. But did you know, by choosing martial arts, you are already ahead of the game? The number one sport for building confidence, improving self esteem and learning social skills is martial arts. This combat sport is uniquely beneficial to those who learn and think differently than others.
It teaches observation skills and the recognition and sensing of strengths and weaknesses in others that leads to the development and adoption of the best strategy in difficult situations. Aside from this game of strategy, it teaches body and spatial awareness and promotes not only physical, but mental strength and endurance.
Martial arts is also unique in that it is a self led journey supported by peers. Allowing for social interaction and the sense of teamwork, whilst giving way for individuals that require more time, care and attention for learning. Students with ADHD and ASD diagnoses especially thrive in this sport due to the practice of patterns and repetition.
We've talked a lot about the benefits of martial arts, but why practice Tae Kwon Do? TKD is one of the most widely recognized martial arts (206 National Assemblies recognize it as an official sport). It is the form of martial arts you see in the Olympics and is the official martial art of the United States. It is like having a "passport" to practice your sport anywhere.
What is unique to TKD is that it requires a level of strength, flexibility and precision that is unprecedented. TKD is not just a series of moves but an applied style of self defense. Meaning once your student has learned to properly defend themselves in an application setting, like riding a bike, they will have this skill FOR LIFE. Unlike most sports, TKD does not have a shelf life.
If your student so chooses, this is a gift and a lifestyle that will go with them through adolescence, into adulthood and beyond, making TKD not just a sport, but an investment for life.
As a parent who cares about your investment in your child and their future, you can encourage consistency and perseverance. Remembering that TKD is not just a sport or hobby for your child, but a way of life like brushing your teeth or learning to drive. It is essential that you help your student stay motivated and engaged while their passion for this art develops and evolves. Most kids will quit practicing sports by the age of 11 and so many talented athletes are lost to tiring changes that occur in adolescence. By staying the course, you are not only ensuring return on your investment, but giving them that crucial outlet kids and teens require.
Are you new to CSMA? What brought your family to us? What do you hope to see change for your student/you and your family? Been with us for a while? How has TKD and CSMA changed you for the better? We want to hear your story and if you're willing, we'd like to share it with others. We are grateful to families willing to share testimonials with us.
